PROJECTTEAM
Professor and supervisor HvA:
Friso ten Holt (RT)
presence in Brazil:15th of February till 2nd of March

Postgraduate student en assistant supervisor:

Menno Trautwein (STT)
presence in Brazil: 17th of February till mid-June

DESCRIPTION OF THE TASK
To do research on the possibilities for a technical structure for low-cost housing on slopes in São José do Vale do Rio Preto and to make a proposal. To search for a technical solution that can be used for other locations as well (concerning for example the angle of the slope, the condition of the soil, the financial costs).

WORKING OUT OF THE TASK

Every week will be started with a team meeting, in which a weekly agenda will be made. Every week will be finished with a team meeting, in which the week will be evaluated. Once in the one or two weeks, the team will send a report (Dutch) to Friso in Amsterdam.

The team will regularly discuss the research with the Prefeitura and others, using drawings and sketches.
Every important meeting (intern as well as extern) will be summarized in a written report (Dutch). Once in the one or two weeks, the team will put a short report (English) with illustrations on the Alfa-Aurora-website and the same information will be send by e-mail  to Professor Camilo Michalka (UFRJ) and Professor Gabriela Rossi (UFRJ).

All of the four following phases of the research will be finished with a written and illustrated report (Dutch) and this report will be send to Friso in Amsterdam, so that he can supervise the team. The tasks mentioned in the four phases will be assigned per person, so that Friso will be able to know who did what and how the team work’s together.

FIRST PHASE:
ORIENTATION – ½ February until ½ March

Purpose: to gain an insight in the physical and social-economical structures of the city, as the ingredients for making a proposal in a later stadium.

Reading and summarizing literature (a.o. Oliver Wisk and Claudio Pavesi).
Making a short report about the history of the city.
Gaining an insight in the social-economical situation and procedures for decision-making.
Exploring the Rio Preto Valley and making simple maps about the following subjects:

  • roads, river, mountains, important buildings etc.
  • distinction between areas with activities concerning mainly working versus living
  • distinction between areas that are property of the Prefeitura versus non-Prefeitura
  • distinction between areas concerning the income of the inhabitant, in three levels

Making an inventory of applied building methods for housing in the Rio Preto Valley.
Making an inventory of possible locations for low-cost housing on slopes and making a choice for one location.

SECOND PHASE:
RESEARCH AND SELECTION OF A LOCATION – ½ March until ½ April

Making a short report about the history of the chosen location.
Making an inventory of applied building methods and costs for housing on the location.
Research on possible building structures for the location.
Interviews with the habitants of the location about for example: needs, expectations, willingness to work together, capacities to participate in the process.
Making an inventory about how the habitants are organised.
Making an inventory about income and work of the habitants.
Research on the specific position of the project on the location, making various alternatives. Preferably by making hand sketches.

  • map and cross-section of the area from Rio Preto river to the chosen location, 1:5000.
  • map and cross-section of the whole location, 1:2000.
  • map and cross-section of the chosen project location, 1:1000.
  • 3d sketch-model, which contributes to discussions, 1:1000

Results Phase 2 (PDF-File 5,0 MB - EN)

THIRD PHASE: ½ April – ½ May

  • Choosing a specific location to work out a proposal for low-cost housing (possibly integrating existing housing), 1:500
  • Dividing the project location in subdivisions 1:500. Study per subdivision 1:200.
  • Proposal for a possible technical structure en building method 1:50, fragments 1:20.
  • Proposal for possible types of houses and sizes 1:200.
  • Making a rough financial calculation (including also labour and infrastructure).

Results Phase 3 (PDF-File 4,4 MB - EN)

FOURTH PHASE: ½ May – ½ June
