The city is located in the valey of the Rio Preto between Petropolis and Teresopolis, approx.3h to the north of the metropolitan of Rio de Janeiro.
It's a small countryside city with approx. 20.000 inhabitants. The significant character of São José do Vale do Rio Preto is the settlement along the riverside between the mountains.

The main parts of it are in close vicinity to the river, some smaller parts of the city are more to the countryside. Parallel to the course of the river the city with its 20km length stretches along the mainroad.

The major character of the city structure is the urban sprawl, so the the cities neighbourhoods appear dissected.
